Understanding Early Menopause
Menopause is a stage of life that all women go through. In clinical terms it begins when the woman stops ovulating and menstruation ceases. This usually takes place between the ages of 45 to 55. At this time the ovaries which have been regularly releasing estrogen and progesterone slow down their production of these hormones.
Premature menopause or early menopause is considered the end of childbearing ability before age 40. You may experience premature ovarian failure (POF) due to one of these conditions:
- Diabetes mellitus
- End-stage renal (kidney) failure (ESRD)
- Autoimmune disease (e.g., lupus)
- Thyroid disease
- Cancer chemotherapy
- Radiation therapy
- Anorexia nervosa
- Being a fraternal or identical twin
Your doctor can measure your anti-Mullerian hormone levels to predict the time when you will likely reach menopause, but the actual date will be influenced by other factors.
Evaluate your symptoms with the online Progesterone Deficiency Symptoms assessment quiz.
This free booklet explains how endometriosis occures and what happens with inadequate progesterone production. These are summarized in the Progesterone booklet displayed opposite.
